Against the Run by Polish Artist Alicja Kwade in Central Park, NY

August 27, 2015

Against the Run will challenge the conventions of time-telling by moving both forward in one sense, and backward in another.

Public Art Fund announces Against the Run, the first solo public art commission in the United States by Polish-born, Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade. An uncanny adaptation of the classic New York City street clock, Kwade's 16 foot-tall sculpture -- specifically conceived for Doris C. Freedman Plaza will display the correct time in a perplexing way. Simultaneously running in reverse while keeping a precise and accurate display of real time, Against the Run will challenge the conventions of time-telling by moving both forward in one sense, and backward in another.

Playfully confounding our expectations, Alicja Kwade's conceptually elegant work forces us to look twice, rethink our assumptions, and see the most familiar of objects as if for the first time, said Nicholas Baume, Public Art Fund Director & Chief Curator.
