Why this season is Arsenal’s best chance for a Premier League Title

By Michael Skok     27 stycznia, 2016

Following a 3-3 draw against Liverpool, a 0-0 draw against Stoke City, and a 0-1 loss to Chelsea at the Emirates, the Gunners have blown numerous opportunities to gain points on fellow rivals Manchester City. As it stands, both City and Arsenal stand three points behind league leaders Leicester City. Even though Arsenal can still win the league when all is said and done, it is possible that these results can ultimately be the difference between Arsene Wenger and his men having the title, and continuously getting top four. Make no mistake, this is the year where Arsenal has had the best chance of winning it, as it may become incredibly more difficult once the next season rolls on for the Gunners.

Manchester United and Chelsea falling well below their Potential
Not one, but two of Arsenal’s closest rivals have become almost a non-factor in this year’s title race. With Mourinho’s Chelsea imploding in the first half of the season, and Manchester United becoming the most offensively-inept version of itself in recent history; those are effectively two sides with plenty of experience winning the title (and oftentimes the favorites) that Arsenal don’t have to worry about besides the actual games against these two particular clubs. Only recently have Chelsea recovered under Guus Hiddink from a dreadful start of the season, while Manchester United simply don’t play a sustainable quality of football to become direct rivals in this year’s title race. Rest assured, at least one of, if not both of these sides will have recovered come next season, what with the extra TV money as well as the pure stature of the clubs, Arsenal will once again be competing on at least 2-3 fronts for the top spot.

Tottenham and Leicester don’t have the Quality to finish Top Spot
The two sides that have replaced the aforementioned members of the “big four” this year are Leicester and Tottenham. Despite both playing fantastic football, compared to the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, the quality throughout these squads do not match up. For Leicester, Claudio Ranieri’s men will have to rely heavily on Jamie Vardy on Riyad Mahrez for the rest of the season, while for Tottenham, the London side will have to compete with Europa League football while keeping up their stellar run so far this season. Compared to the experience of managers like Manuel Pellegrini and Arsene Wenger, as well as the quality and amount of match winners both clubs have, Arsenal’s other two “rivals” this season will each have to have each their own mini-miracle to win in what would be an unprecedented Premier League title. Both Arsenal and Manchester City have more quality throughout their squads, and that should shine through as the season progresses to its final stage.

Pep Guardiola’s move to City?
Manchester City, despite being in the title race this season, are another side that is punching well below their weight. The quality the squad already has, while adding the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, and Fabian Delph, has given Manuel Pellegrini a squad deep enough to beat most Premier League sides on quality alone. Unfortunately for the blue side of Manchester, they find themselves three points behind Leicester, a squad who has spent exponentially less than the likes of Man City. There has been questions for some time now about how much Manchester City have been playing within themselves. Certainly in their recent Champions League campaigns, Pellegrini has time and time again failed to setup his squad properly against the elite of Europe. With Pep Guardiola coming in (possibly), Manchester City may finally have their own dynasty in the premier league. Arsenal are currently competing against a side that at any moment may explode into form, as they have done so numerous times in the past, but have become way too inconsistent compared to relatively how strong their squad is across the board. With all signs to Guardiola succeeding Pellegrini in the summer, the Premier League may very well be locked down in terms of the title race. With the amount of money City can spent, as well as the quality they already have, Manchester City can become the true dominant force in England for years to come, making it ever more difficult for Wenger to win that illusive trophy.
