Gerrard Leaving a Zidane-esque Conclusion at Liverpool

23 marca, 2015

by Michael Skok.

It only took less than a minute for Steven Gerrard to leave a massive impact in what could be the deciding match for Champions League spots this season in the EPL. Unfortunately for Liverpool, it was reminiscent to the infamous “slip” against Chelsea last season for the title run-in. Against Manchester United, Gerrard displayed his positives for only 30 seconds, spraying passes around, but with a reckless challenge on Juan Mata, and then a clear stamp on Angel Herrera; it left referee Martin Atkinson little choice but to send off Steven Gerrard with a red card.

Of course, the climax of his Gerrard’s career in the 2013-2014 season was the aforementioned slip against Mourinho’s Chelsea. The ending for Gerrard’s Liverpool career is turning into a sour one. For Gerrard’s own sake as well as the club’s, he will be hoping that the club he’s become synonymous with secures a top four position come end of the season.

The dramatic ending for his career is also reminiscent of another great, Zinedine Zidane, both a champion at club and country level, ended a remarkable footballing career with a headbutt on Marco Materazzi. For Gerrard, it might be already too late for him to avert a similar bitter ending.
