Often referred to as the “brains” of the United States midfield, the man who brought everything together for Jurgen Klinsmann’s men, you would be hard pressed to find someone as crucial to the USA as Michael Bradley. He wasn’t able to impose himself against Ghana in USA’s win, as the African nation dominated possession of the ball throughout the majority of the game. Against Portugal, his influence that Americans were accustomed to once again shown through, often times giving fantastic passes to Clint Dempsey, exposing Portugal’s makeshift back line time and again.
However, one aspect of his game that simply has to improve is his ball retention. Too many times was he giving away passes to the Ghanaian side, simply fueling their offense unnecessarily. And, despite having a noticeably improved performance against Portugal, his ball retention once again came into question. He needlessly was dawdling on the ball in the 94th minute, before he lost possession, which then eventually led to the same play that saw Ronaldo’s world class cross find the head of Silvestre Varela, tying the game 2-2 and breaking American hearts.
Bradley, who will most likely play against Germany, must have more composure on the ball. Giving the ball away to arguably the most dynamic midfield at the World Cup is only piling on more pressure for United States’ defense. He must perform at his best on and off the ball in order for any hope the U.S. midfield can contend with Germany’s. He must hustle and harry the likes of Toni Kroos and Phillip Lahm, who would certainly feature for the favored German side. But more importantly he simply cannot cede needless possession to the elite midfield. Limiting counter attacks would be vital to the U.S.A attempting to progress into the Round of 16.
If U.S.A are asking for a perfect game from Bradley, the best time would be now.
