Dr Nasiek's Seminar: Importance of Evaluating Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS)

Thursday September 30th, 2021, Allied Neurology and Interventional Pain Practice held yet another successful seminar. A group of doctors, lawyers, chiropractors, and medical technology industry representatives were invited by Dr. Dariusz Nasiek, Pain Management Specialist, and Dr. Ravi Tikoo, MD, Board Certified Neurologist, to discuss the importance of evaluating Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS).

At the beginning of the meting Dr Nasiek introduced Lauren Bellini, RN – a new marketing and events coordinator for his practice. Lauren received a warm welcome and wishes to be successful in her new endeavor helping the practice.

Next, Dr. Nasiek introduced Dr. Steven Ugras, MD – an orthopedic hand surgeon, his long-term friend, and collaborator. Dr. Ugras specializes in the hand surgery and receives referral from Dr. Nasiek’s practice, Allied Neurology, whenever an EMG confirms carpal tunnel syndrome which requires surgical intervention.

Once again, Dr. Nasiek and Dr. Tikoo presented on topics related to TBI. They indicated the silent TBI epidemic, the difficulty of diagnosis, the seriousness of consequences, permanency of the injury, and new methods of diagnosis using EEG and Tele EEG. Because TBI is a serious and permanent injury to the brain, it is difficult both to diagnose and to prove. While TBI may lead to the formation of brain scarring and other serious pathology, detection of either is difficult. With the golden standard of detection normally being a brain biopsy, such pathology is too aggressive to stand as a routine evaluation. Even an EEG may miss 90% of the seizure generating scar tissue unless performed over a long duration during sleep.

Thankfully, new TELE EEG technology has been developed and can be performed over a prolonged period of more than 3 days. It is the most sensitive tool so far to prove focal seizure activity as the results of TBI. Although medical benefits regarding any brain and spinal cord injury in the state on NJ remain at the level of $250k, even a $15k policy will allow for such diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in the treatments of such injuries.

After his core presentation, Dr. Nasiek introduced the concept of prehospital COVID-19 treatments. The treatment’s protocol as published in respected medical journals were presented by Dr. Nasiek and discussed among the atendees. Although not widely practiced, these prehospital therapeutic regiments are nevertheless successful in decreasing hospitalizations in over 80% of people and have a decreased chance of death in almost 75%.

After these presentations, Dr. Nasiek and Lauren Bellini, Nasiek’s marketing and events coordinator, raffled three gift certificates and many attendees stayed long after to talk and exchange information. The program was very well received as per multiple thank you notes that the organization has received following the program.
As usual, great food and even better conversation was exchanged, while the important spread of new knowledge occurred.

The next meeting is expected to be held on October 21st, from 7-9 PM at the same place. We are extending our invitation to all our friends, contributors, and professional family to participate in our future events.
