One Once Only

01 września, 2010

The Worldʼs Largest Solo Theatre Festival begins this November in NYC One actor and one performance - this is a basic rule of the new 2010 United Solo Theatre Festival, already the Largest Solo Festival in the world. The inaugural edition of the festival will take place at Theatre ROW in New York City this November.

45 artists will present their productions in a fifty-five seat “Black Box” theatre ideal for solo performances. The Festival stage is a part of the Theater ROW, a highly acclaimed venue in the heart of the New York City theater district. All shows will be presented between November 8 and 21, and artists will compete for a collection of various awards, including: the best in acting award, best performance, best script, and audience awards.

Solo artists choose scripts of various genres to present at the Festival. In the program there are dramas, comedies, tragedies, musicals, storytelling, puppetry, dance, stand-up, and multi-media shows. The board of the Festival, made up of artists and producers with vast experience in solo performance, has chosen an unique selection of shows from those that applied. The artists come from 3 continents. Among them there are presenters from many regions of the USA as well as from Germany, Serbia, Poland, Botswana, and South Africa.

The artists will express human nature through diverse topics, such as new generation perspectives, racial challenges, and gender or sexuality issues. Most of the performances are original work, although some are adaptations of classical literature. Some performances will contain songs, some multi-lingual speeches. For example, actor Eric-Dominique Perez, from New York, will present his show in English, French and Spanish, and actor Herbert Kaluza from Berlin will perform in English, German, Polish and Russian.

“We were looking for both highly experienced artists and new talents that could entertain and challenge multicultural audiences in New York City. Gladly, we\'ve found performances that celebrate the uniqueness of human beings and treasure the diversity of the human race,” says Omar Sangare, United Soloʼs founder and artistic director.

There are 19 one-man and 26 one-woman shows. 32 of the artists live in New York, but many of these have origins in Latin America, Asia, Europe and Africa. 9 come from various states: California, DC, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Vermont. 4 of them permanently live abroad and will come especially for the Festival. Peter van Heerden comes from South Africa, Jelena Stupljanin is a movie star in Serbia, and Donald Molosi is a young performer from Botswana.

Tickets, with a price of $18, will be available in the Theater ROW (42nd St, New York City) and via Telecharge. Sales begins 9/27.

United Solo\'s online presence is an important part of the project. The website www.unitedsolo.org provides up-to-date news, shows profiles and useful information. The news updates can be found on Twitter and Facebook. This social network is also used to publish recommended solo shows, funny movies found on the web and will be a place to present artistsʼ profiles and clips. Behind the scenes news is available on the unitedsolo.wordpress.com blog. All these sources of communications will provide daily coverage during the Festival.
