Natalia ll, Kwiekulik & Artur Zmijewski in Cutting Realities: Render Strategies in Art

18 września, 2008

Works from Kontakt, The Art Collection of Erste Bank Group, Vienna

Cutting Realities, organized on the 40th anniversary of the global upheavals of 1968, links the historically important decade of the 1960s with contemporary approaches to issues of gender. The works of the 15 participating artists are drawn from Kontakt, the art collection of Erste Bank Group, Vienna, which focuses on art from Central and Eastern Europe.

Artists: Mária Bartuszová, Valie Export, Tomislav Gotovac, Sanja Ivekovic, Šejla Kameric, Bela Kolárová,Kwiekulik, Denisa Lehocká, Ulrike Lienbacher, Natalia LL, Dorit Margreiter, Tanja Ostojic, Hans Scheirl, Katerina Šedá, Artur Zmijewski.

Natalia LL is a true icon of Polish political and feminist art. For over 40 years, she has been among Poland\'s top media artists and simultaneously one of the world\'s most important feminist artists. Her extremely rich and multi-faceted work is rooted in body art and conceptual art. In addition, her penchant for formal experimentation coupled with vast knowledge and deep reflection has prompted her to produce many excellent texts.

The works in the Kontakt collection address the historic transformations in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, where art – against the backdrop of cultural, political, and socioeconomic developments – has played and continues to play an important role in forming counter movements that challenge the dominant social (until 1989, communist) agenda.

Curated by Walter Seidl, Commissioned and Produced by Andreas Stadler.

The Exhibition is organized by the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, and kindly supported by the Erste Bank, the Polish Cultural Institute in New York, and Austrian Airlines
