The World Knew: Jan Karski\'s Mission for Humanity

15 stycznia, 2013

Jan Karski. A brave man? Better: a just man. - Elie Wiesel

On January 22, 2013 an exhibition about Jan Karski\'s life, from his modest beginnings in Lodz, and his remarkable mission during WWII to present evidence of the Holocaust to world leaders in Washington and London, to his distinguished career as a professor of government at Georgetown University, The World Knew: Jan Karski\'s Mission for Humanity will be open to the public at the UN during the week preceding the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, January 27, following the theme "Rescue during the Holocaust: The Courage to Care."

Karski reported what he had seen with his own eyes in the Warsaw Ghetto and at a transit station en route to the Belzec death camp, to President Roosevelt, Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden, and other top Allied leaders. Karski\'s stature as one of the great heroes of the Twentieth Century is a tribute to him and to the Secret State that made his mission possible. He was honored as "The Righteous Among Nations" by the Yad Vashem Institute in 1982. In 1995, he received Poland\'s highest decoration, "Order of the White Eagle," from President Lech Walesa. In 2012, US President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Karski the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

This March, Georgetown University Press will publish the authorized US edition of Story of a Secret State: My Report to the World, Karski\'s memoir of WWII, his time in the Underground, and his report of the systematic killing of Jews by Nazi German forces. The volume will include new illustrations, photographs, historical notes and an introduction by Secretary Madeleine Albright, a biographical essay by Yale Professor Timothy Snyder, and an afterword by the Honorable Zbigniew Brzezinski.

The World Knew - Jan Karski\'s Mission for Humanity has been produced by the Polish History Museum in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland and the Polish Mission to the UN.
