Raheem Sterling Step in Right Direction for Manchester City

Michael Skok     21 lipca, 2015

Raheem Sterling transferred from Liverpool to Manchester City for 49 million pounds, making him the highest value English player ever. This, by all accounts, is an exorbitant fee that Manchester City had paid massively for. Yet this is a signing the club had to get done.

Having the oldest premier league squad in 2014/2015, as well as having debilitating performances both in Europe and in England, have shown that this squad needs fresh blood in order to continue being a relevant force in the competitions they are in. Raheem Sterling, who is only 20, and who signed a 5-year contract with the Citizens, is a signing that is indeed risky, but is a risk Manchester City should take. The player, besides age and potential, also offers pace on the wings, which is something Manchester City have lacked – with only having the likes of Jesus Navas to perform that role. Raheem Sterling offers City an extra outlet where they can be much more deadly on the counter attack, with players such as Aguero and Sterling receiving passes from David Silva and Samir Nasri.

Raheem Sterling will also benefit, since he was at his best when he had Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge to play alongside with – with nine goals and five assists, even then; with a considerably weaker Liverpool in the following season he was able to put up seven goals and seven assists in the league. He should be able to flourish playing alongside David Silva, Sergio Aguero, and Yaya Toure.

For Manchester City, this should be the first of several transfers where they can compete with Europe’s brightest talents. If they want to become the favorites for the Premier League in the long term, a new era of footballers must be brought in; footballers like Raheem Sterling.
