FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26th

5:00 P.M. Opening reception and remarks by Rabbi Daveen Litwin, Chaplain of The Claremont Colleges

6:00 P.M. Remarks by the Honorable Mariusz Brymora, Consul General of Poland in Los Angeles

6:30 – 8:00 P.M. Panel 1: “The Legacy of Jan Karski”

Jan Karski was a patriot who alerted western leaders to the Holocaust taking place in his native Poland. On the centennial of his birth we consider his legacy. Panelists include:

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th

10:00– 11:45 A.M. Panel 2: “Responsibility to Protect: Contending Perspectives”

Reformers have long urged the international community to acknowledge a responsibility to intervene and rescue populations at risk. Others have looked more skeptically on such international interventions. Panelists exploring this controversy include:

Seyom Brown, Brandeis University, emeritus Heidi Haddad, Pomona College Alan Kuperman, University of Texas, Austin

1:00 – 2:45 P.M. Panel 3: “Responsibility to Protect: Hard Cases”

The implications of differing philosophical approaches to international intervention become manifest when we examine contemporary cases, including debates about the appropriate international response to developments in Syria and Ukraine. Panelists addressing these debates include: Cameron Munter, Pomona College

F. Stephen Larrabee, RAND Corporation

Jiri Schneider, Prague Security Studies Institute Mieczyslaw Boduszynski, Pomona College

All panels will be held in the Hampton Room, Malott Commons, Scripps College Campus. The event is free and open to the public. Seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.
