Polish Consulate mansion to open its doors to Chicago architecture enthusiasts during the famed \"Open House Chicago\"

The building housing the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland will open its doors to architecture enthusiasts during the weekend of October 19-20.

One of the seven remaining houses designated as Chicago Landmarks, the Polish Consulate General serves the largest Polish community outside of Poland, with more than 3 million people of Polish ancestry calling Chicago and the Midwest home.

The seat of the Consulate, an English town house with elements of the Italian Renaissance, was designed in 1916 by Benjamin Marshall as a private residence for Mr. Bernard Albert Eckhardt, a milling industrialist and Illinois State Senator. After a 2-year renovation completed in 2008, the building was given the Chicago Landmark Award for Preservation Excellence.

Behind the Scenes Access: Tour the mansion with Polish Consuls and learn more about Polonia and modern-day Poland, a successful democracy, regional leader and one of key European players, fostering partnerships – through its Chicago Consulate – between Poles and Americans who cherish many shared principles and values.

Highlights of the Consulate tour include: the Grand Living Room, Palm Room, Mirror Room, Wedding Room and Consul General Paulina Kapuścińska\'s office overlooking Lake Michigan.
