Fall 2013 Season at the Polish Cultural Institute New York

18 sierpnia, 2013

Two important films are premiering in the US in October: the highly-anticipated and controversial Aftermath by Wladyslaw Pasikowski, which will be shown at the JCC in Manhattan and Agnieszka Holland\'s newest work Burning Bush, presented at the New York Film Festival.

This season, we are looking at Polish traditions in new ways and finding new traditions in contemporary Polish culture. We hope that our fellow travelers will not only find culture of the highest quality in these offerings, but will also greet them with openness to new experiences, ideas, and personalities.

Two important films are premiering in the US in October: the highly-anticipated and controversial Aftermath by Wladyslaw Pasikowski, which will be shown at the JCC in Manhattan and Agnieszka Holland\'s newest work Burning Bush, presented at the New York Film Festival. In November, the series Different Ages, Different Voices: Polish Women In Film will feature the Polish films by and about women, including films by Kasia Roslaniec and Malgoska Szumowska (both awarded at this year\'s Berlinale).

Highlights of the visual arts program are Reflections on Every Man: The Work of Jan Sawka--a major retrospective at Newark\'s Gallery Aferro in September, and PERFORMA13, the biennial festival of performance art. The Polish Pavilion Without Walls in Times Square will feature Akademia Ruchu; other artists participating in the festival include Pawel Althamer, Agnieszka, Katarzyna Krakowiak, and Radek Szlaga with Konrad Smolenski.

Among our music events, there is the first US tour of the Janusz Prusinowski Trio, advocates for Polish folk music with concerts at the World Music Festival Chicago, DROM in NYC, the Kennedy Center, and many more. In October, the New York Early Music Celebration Pro Musica Polonica, a two-week festival of early music, will present over twenty concerts, including presentations by Polish guest artists Ensemble Peregrina and Arte dei Suonatori, among others. Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki comes to Symphony Space for a live broadcast event, hosted by WQXR-Q2\'s Helga Davis on Oct. 25. The same venue will host Witold Lutoslawski: A Centennial Tribute in December.

Two Polish writers will be in the US as part of our literature program. Tadeusz Dabrowski, an award-winning poet published in over 20 languages, will do a reading tour in Northeastern United States in October, and then take at a residency at Writers OMI at Ledig House in Ghent, NY. Witold Szablowski, one of Poland\'s leading journalists working in the tradition of Ryszard Kapuscinski, will be among guests of the 10th Annual New Literature from Europe festival in November.
