Polish heroine Mrs. Danuta Renk-Mikulska honored in Chicago as Righteous Among the Nations

28 lipca, 2013

Mrs. Danuta Renk-Mikulska was awarded Israel\'s highest civilian honor: the Medal \'Righteous Among the Nations\' for her heroic stance in rescuing Jews from extermination by the German Nazis during the Second World War.

The Polish honoree received the distinction on July 23, 2013 from Israeli Consul General to the Midwest Roey Gilad on behalf of the State of Israel. The two hour ceremony was held in Skokie\'s Holocaust Museum and Education Center on the outskirts of Chicago. Among attendees were Polish Consul General Paulina Kapuścińska, director Isaac Mekel of the American Society for Yad Vashem and president Richard Hirschhaut of the Holocaust Museum.

Polish citizens have the world\'s highest count (6,394) of individuals awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations even though out of the entire German-occupied Europe it was only in occupied Poland that the German military had orders to immediately shoot any Polish citizen caught helping Jews, along with the family of the caught rescuer.
