The Presidential Medal of Freedom granted posthumously to Jan Karski by U.S. President Barack Obama last year has arrived at the Polish Consulate General in Chicago.

The Medal will be on display this coming Monday, April 8th, at 12:30 PM at Richard J. Daley Center, 50 W. Washington St. Chicago, IL 60602.

The display of the medal will accompany the official unveiling of an exhibit about the life and legacy of Jan Karski. The exhibit will be unveiled by Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford and Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago Paulina Kapuścińska and will remain on display at Richard J. Daley Center through April 23.

As a young officer in the Polish Government in exile, Jan Karski was the first to carry to the Free World an eyewitness account of the destruction of the Jewish people in German-occupied Poland while there was still time to act. On May 29, 2012, U.S. President Barack Obama awarded posthumously Jan Karski with America’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was presented to Adam Daniel Rotfeld, Poland’s former Foreign Minister and himself a Jewish Holocaust survivor.
