Statement on US missile defence system due to the emergence of new threats, especially from the Democratic People\'s Republic of Korea.

17 marca, 2013

On 15 March, US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced plans to modify the missile defence systems it is building due to the emergence of new threats, especially from the Democratic People\'s Republic of Korea.

The United States will enhance the system\'s capabilities in Japan and Alaska. It also confirmed, as Secretary of Defense Hagel noted, that the US would build a missile defence system in Europe (EPAA, phase 2 and 3) in Romania and Poland. The United States is changing plans for the implementation of the last, fourth phase of EPAA, that is the potential deployment in Europe of not yet ready SM-3 block IIB missiles, shifting resources to other purposes.

The chief of US diplomacy John Kerry called Minister Radosław Sikorski ahead of time to inform him about the US decisions, which are in line with Polish-US cooperation agreements on missile defence.

The US-built missile defence system EPAA, including the base in Redzikowo, is a key element of NATO missile defence system. Its purpose is to protect the Alliance\'s European territory, population and armed forces.

Donald Tusk\'s cabinet has realistically assessed that the implementation of MD successive stages will be determined by the changing international security situation
