07 października, 2012

Two-time World Series championship manager Terry Francona was named the new manager of Major League Baseball\'s Cleveland Indians.

The American League club announced that Francona, who interviewed for the job on Friday, would become the Indians\' 42nd all-time manager.

Francona, who guided the Boston Red Sox to World Series crowns in 2004 and 2007, replaces Manny Acta, who was fired on September 27 in the final days of a 68-94 season.

Cleveland finished 20 games behind AL Central division winner Detroit.

Sandy Alomar Jnr had also interviewed for the job. He directed the Indians to a 3-3 finish after taking over for Acta on an interim basis over the final days of the season.

Francona, 53, managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997 through 2000 and guided the Red Sox from 2004 through 2011, compiling a 1,029-915 record. He spent the past season as a television network baseball commentator.

Francona played for the Indians in 1988 and worked for the club in a front office job in 2001.
