17 stycznia, 2015

The Polish Mission to the United Nations in New York is proud to organize a conference on preventing genocide entitled: “Why have we failed in preventing genocides and how to change that?” The event will take place on January 21st, at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The conference is scheduled to take place between 10.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m., in the ECOSOC Chamber, Secretariat Building. The key-note speech will be delivered by Dr. Piotr Cywiński, the Director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, an ecumenist, initiator and active participant of the Polish-Jewish and Christian-Jewish dialogue. The list of speakers includes, among others, high-ranking UN officials, the Permanent Representatives, as well as representatives of the civil society. The participation of members of the diplomatic corps, including ambassadors, is also envisaged. Detailed programme will be provided shortly.

The conference will be complemented by the opening of the exhibition entitled “Forbidden Art”, co- organized by the Polish Mission together with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the Polish History Museum, the Consulate General of Poland in New York and the Polish Mission of the Orchard Lake Schools, which presents the artwork of former prisoners of the German Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and other camps. The pieces of art, created by men and women from a variety of nations and ethnicities, using a variety of artistic forms, bear genuine witness to the past atrocities. Exhibit opening will take place in the UN Visitors Lobby, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The two events organized by the Permanent Mission of Poland to the UN will commence the series of initiatives to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27th, 1945.
