European Support for Ukraine

07 maja, 2014

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe met on 6 May in Vienna.

“Sixty five years of the Council of Europe coincides with dates that are important for Poland: the 25th anniversary of the collapse of Communism and the 10th anniversary of Poland’s accession to the EU. This is an opportunity for profound reflection on modern-day challenges facing the international community, including the conflict in Ukraine,” underscored Deputy Minister Henryka Mościcka-Dendys on 6 May at a session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Vienna.

The deputy minister reaffirmed Poland’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Poland is prepared to provide support to the government of Ukraine in the reform process, in particular, in decentralisation, public finances and fighting corruption,” she noted.

Poland’s deputy foreign minister also pointed out the Council of Europe’s special role in supporting European aspirations of the Ukrainian people. She underscored that the organisation has developed many legal and institutional measures and instruments that the government in Kyiv should use to enhance stability and security and to promote democracy and human rights, including minority rights.

The Committee of Ministers is the supreme decision-making body of the Council of Europe. It is composed of foreign ministers of all member states. The Ministers meet, as a rule, once a year at ministerial sessions in May. At the end of the session, Austria will hand over the chair of the Committee of Ministers to Azerbaijan, which will hold it for the next six months.
