Poland among 20 wealthiest countries in the world...

13 stycznia, 2014

Poland’s leap forward: how shall we use nearly PLN 500 billion from the EU?

- Modernization is not an objective itself, yet rather a tool to improve the living standards of Polish families - Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after a cabinet meeting on the EU budget for 2014-2020.

What are our main objectives for the coming years?

  • By 2022, Poland will have joined the G20 and reached a GDP of 80 percent of the EU average.

- Today it is 67 percent, and one shall remember that we started from roughly 50 percent, when this European adventure was about to begin - Prime Minister Tusk remarked.
He added that Poland is swiftly reducing backlog towards the most developed European countries.

  • In 2016/2017, as regards the total length of motorways in use, we shall outrun the GB.

We shall be fifth country in Europe just behind Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

  • The poverty level shall drop below the EU average - at least 1.5 million people shall come out of poverty.

The poverty rate better illustrates the actual living standard than, let’s say, the average wage. - If we manage to achieve this objective, then we will be able to speak about the real success of Poland’s progress on European path, that the European money was factually invested in people – the Prime Minister said.

  • By 2023, the access to broadband Internet will have reached 100%.
  • Investment outlay in research and development will reach 2% of GDP.

The government assumes that half of the funds will come from the budget, and the rest from companies.

  • PLN 25 billion shall be allocated to revitalization of cities, out of which PLN 8 billion for the revitalization of medium-sized cities.

I do believe that it is a much wiser response to the problems of former capital of provinces than building a political mirage of provincial cities - the Prime Minister stressed.

  • Strategic intervention areas shall be established

- Extra money shall be allocated to so called strategic intervention areas - said Donald Tusk. This way he referred to the areas of structural poverty whom European money is to help to catch up with the richer parts of the country.
