Trailer of the Week - Deus Ex, Call of Duty or The Witcher?

12 kwietnia, 2015

The period after the holiday saw a lull for new media and game announcements, as is routine. As the summer blockbuster season and E3 come into focus, a vast marketing apparatus is finally creaking into action. This week was probably the most significant yet this year for game trailers, with three huge AAA titles taking their turns in the spotlight.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided – Announcement Trailer

Deus Ex: Human Revolution marked a return to a cult hit which defined the nonlinear approach for gameplay. Deus Ex is at its best when it gives the players many choices on how to approach a situation. In this light, the Announcement Trailer for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided excelled, showcasing various new stealth and action methods for protagonist Adam Jensen to stylishly take on his opponents. Following the events of Human Revolution, Mankind Divided features a humanity deeply suspicious of augmented individuals, providing the fuel for a tense and dangerous geopolitical conflict. The trailer also plays with elements from the previous game, such as the theme of Icarus flying too close to the sun. Several times, you’ll notice angel wings being referenced, as well as an artful take on the first game’s theme. Michael McCann has returned to score this installment, giving fans even more reason to rejoice.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Official Teaser

This is pretty routine. Yes, there’s a new Call of Duty this year. Yes, Treyarch’s making it. Yes, it’s Black Ops III. Yes, this is the teaser that prepares fans for the official announcement. Honestly not much else to say. Does its job.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Official Gameplay Trailer

At this point, The Witcher 3 is a little over a month away. Yet, we still feel like we haven’t seen that much of it. That’s more of a function of how big the final game is going to be, even with CD Projekt Red’s recent half-hour long walkthroughs. What we see here is a snapshot of Geralt and the surrounding lands of the Northern Realms. The developer is playing up both the size and dynamism of the world, as well as coloring in the personalities of secondary characters. There’s humor, combat, and customization here. This trailer’s shine is slightly dampened by the oddly monotone delivery of the narrator, but it is still a great montage that overwhelms with its scope.

Trailer of the Week: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided – Announcement Trailer

We’ve seen and are eagerly anticipating The Witcher 3. Black Ops III is surely going to polish the formula and be a huge holiday title. But, it’s the Deus Ex debut that most earned its goosebumps. The trailer itself is beautifully put together, with visuals, effects, music, and voices all building to the crescendo that is the remix of the previous game’s beloved Icarus theme song. This trailer radiates style and confidence, and that is why it is our Trailer of the Week.
