Chasing the King of Hearts - Story of the Holocaust in NYC

February 16, 2017

Hanna Krall's latest riveting story of the Holocaust: Tuesday, February 28, 2017 - Monday, March 6, 2017

Feminist Press, Astoria Bookshop, CUNY Graduate Center, The Museum of Jewish Heritage, Brooklyn Public Library
and The Polish Cultural Institute New York present: Chasing the King of Hearts.

"Krall's unique voice... dominates this detached, surreal, curiously playful tale of a woman of indefatigable resourcefulness trapped between history and her heart. A quirky but exceptional story of infinite love and life-sustaining commitment." --Kirkus (starred review)

Journalist Hanna Krall is one of Poland's leading chroniclers of the Holocaust. A Holocaust survivor herself, for decades Krall has documented the moving personal stories behind one of history's greatest catastrophes, bringing the lives of victims and survivors to life through her unique writing.

In this canonical work of Polish reportage, Krall crafts a terse and unexpected human lesson out of an occupation-era love story. When Izolda's husband is imprisoned in Auschwitz, she promises she will not rest until she has rescued him. The story spans the Warsaw Ghetto, the war-torn countryside, and the nightmare of the German death camps. Chasing the King of Hearts has won the English PEN Award and the Found in Translation Award.

Krall's translator Philip Boehm will be joined by top scholars, historians, and translators to discuss Krall's work at Astoria Bookshop, the CUNY Graduate Center and the Museum of Jewish Heritage. Participants include renowned literary scholar Bella Brodzki; Svetlana Alexievich's translator Bela Shayevich; Esther Allen, one of America's top translators from Spanish; David Samuels, literary editor of Tablet Magazine; and more. Boehm will also appear in a Polish-language event at Greenpoint Public Library.

Each event will feature a specially-filmed video interview with Krall, conducted by Mariusz Szczygiel, one of Poland's top journalists and authors.
