Tomasz Foltyn and Irena Lipinska Hosted by Dance/UP USA in Philadelphia

September 11, 2014

Polish choreographers Tomasz Foltyn and Irena Lipinska will be in residence at Dance/UP Philadelphia, building on an exchange launched in 2012 between Grazyna Kulczyk's Art Stations Foundation at Stary Browar in Poznan, Poland, the Polish Cultural Institute New York, and Dance/USA in Philadelphia.

The exchange program gives emerging choreographers opportunities to develop an artistic language through experimentation in dance, intellectual dialogue and self-reflection, experiencing new work and joining in international dialogue with fellow artists, including from other disciplines. The program offers a unique study opportunity, not related to the production of a show, for participants to experience a new community, take artistic risks, redefine their own stances, discuss their creative processes, and to find inspiration.

Philadelphia:

Tuesday, September 16, 7-9pm

Show and Tell at Mascher Space Coop.
The Polish artists participate in talks on artistic work and practice with local choreographers Da-Da-Dance (Eun-Jung Choi and Guillermo Ortega Tanus), Megan Bridge (thefidget), Christina Gesualdi, Meg Foley, and Rafael Xavier, as well as visiting Hungarian artists Adrienn Hód and Judit Szamosi. The talks will be followed by socializing and refreshments.

Thursday, September 25, 7-9pm

Informal presentation of dances and works-in-progress at thefidget space, including solo by Irena Lipinska, and an in-progress film screening by Tomasz Foltyn. Foltyn will also perform a public improvisation, organized with local dancers met at the Show and Tell.

Irena Lipinska is currently working on research into Queer performance in America as part of a workshop in NYC prior to the residency. Irena's project is titled Queer Choreographies: Whatever The F***k That Means. A decomposition workshop in collaboration with dance artist Miguel Gutierrez.

The Polish artists will also participate in many events during the FringeArts festival, and attend a retrospective on David Lynch at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts and other locations throughout the city.

Dance USA/Philadelphia is a branch of Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance. It provides advocacy, resources, services and collaborative opportunities for the dance community in the greater Philadelphia area. Its mission is to advocate for dance as an art form and vital component of our culture, increase the capabilities of dance artists and organizations, and enhance public awareness and support for dance.

The Exchange is made possible by Dance/USA Philadelphia (USA), Art Stations Foundation by Grazyna Kulczyk (Poznan), Stary Browar (Poznan), the Institute of Music and Dance (Warsaw) and the Polish Cultural Institute New York.
