Manchester City’s Spending is warranted

26 lipca, 2017

The addition of Benjamin Mendy has brought plenty of attention to the already heavy spending side from Manchester. With Kyle Walker and Danilo, Manchester City has spent around 140 million pounds this summer. This has made them the highest ever spenders on defense, however all of this is warranted.

City hasn’t invested in the full back position since 2012. Since then, the side has spent plenty to improve their talents all across the pitch. The additions of Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sane, and Fernandinho have all been fantastic signings; yet are still short on the flanks. Time and time again, the age of Sagna, Zabaleta, and Kolarov had shown to be weakenesses, as sides from Europe and England exploited the slow pace of the full backs to attack City’s notoriously weak back line.

Kyle Walker has been one of the best right backs in the Premier League for the last few seasons. His pace is a tremendous boon for Pep Guardiola’s side, and can prove to be a useful second man when he plays with the likes of Sterling and Sane on the wing. Pep Guardiola’s heavy possession style can also be well balanced more, as the pace of Walker can recover quickly whenever the ball would be given to the opposition in a counterattacking scenario.

Danilo, being the weakest of the purchases, can still provide much flexibility for Pep’s side. His ability to play on both flanks, while also defensive midfield, can prove to be a handy asset for Manchester City. He can rotate for either flank, while also giving energy to Pep’s midfield whenever Yaya Toure, Gundogen, or Fernandinho tire throughout the match.

Lastly, Benjamin Mendy is the most impressive signing. One of the best crossers in Europe last season, the former Monaco left back was incredible for his side in the Champions League. Having also a key part in Manchester City’s loss last season, Mendy constantly overlapped on the right flank of City’s, interchanging well with Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar. That sort of dynamism can do very well for Ciity when it comes to the Champions League and the Premier League next season.
