What we learned from Bayern Munich’s Supercup win over Dortmund

19 sierpnia, 2016

Carlo Ancelotti started off his inaugural season at Munich with a trophy following a 2-0 victory over Thomas Tuchel’s Dortmund in normal time. Goals from Arturo Vidal and Thomas Mueller managed to be the difference in an incredibly close competition with Dortmund dominating the earlier stages. The game offered a great preview of the Bundesliga and a glimpse for what the future holds for both teams.

1. Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich still the Top Two
If anything was reassured, it was that Dortmund and Munich look to be the reigning top dogs in Germany come this season. Dortmund played with an incredible intensity and finesse that few can rival. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich’s resiliency and ability to bounce was proven once again by incredible performances by the likes of Manuel Neuer, Arturo Vidal, and Javi Martinez. The quality of play is backed up their strength of depth, a feature that no other Bundesliga side comes close to competing with. Dortmund’s first XI didn’t have the likes of Andre Schurrle, Mario Gotze, Marco Reus, and Lukasz Piszczek playing. While Bayern’s team still had Jerome Boateng, Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa, and Joshua Kimmich not playing in starting lineup. The incredible depth these two sides boast will make sure they will have enough personnel and quality to compete in Europe and in Germany. Also, Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti’s look to be the league’s best managers on paper this season.

2. Javi Martinez can be the difference for Bayern Munich
One name that hasn’t come up frequently for Bayern throughout the last few seasons was the former Atletic Bilbao player in Javi Martinez. The midfielder once again played in center back for the Bavarians and played a fantastic game. However, it is his inclusion in midfield that can push Bayern to become treble winners. He was one of the most vital pieces in Bayern’s last treble win, shielding an already talented back four with his physicality and technique. His inclusion in midfield once again would just add more defensive security over a backline that already contains some of the best talent Europe has to offer. A midfield three of Martinez, Vidal and Thiago would immediately one of the most balanced and complete in Europe.

3. Hummels needs time to Adjust
One of Bayern’s new signings was on display in the Supercup. Former Dortmund captain Mats Hummels faced his former club in the victory. For much of the match, the German international seemed to struggle against the pressing from Thomas Tuchel’s side. He had brief lapses of concentration; misjudging headers, misplacing passes, and ball watching seemed to plague his play throughout the match. Once Boateng is fit however, perhaps Hummels will feel much more comfortable, having played with Boateng numerous times within the German national team.
