What we Learned from Dortmund's Defeat from Bayern Munich

19 sierpnia, 2016

Thomas Tuchel started off his inaugural season at Munich with a trophy following a 2-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in normal time. Goals from Arturo Vidal and Thomas Mueller managed to be the difference in an incredibly close competition with Dortmund dominating the earlier stages. The game offered a great preview of the Bundesliga and a glimpse for what the future holds for both teams.

1. Moussa Dembele an incredible Prospect
Dortmund’s new boy in Moussa Dembele looked incredibly well against the Bavarian giants. The French prospect showed poise, pace, and technique that troubled the likes of Mats Hummels. He was offering runs off the ball all match, which constantly proved to be troubling for Bayern’s backline to deal with; having to rely on Manuel Neuer to keep the scoresheet at 0-0 in the first half. If not for Neuer’s heroics, Dembele would have certainly scored a goal or two. Also his ability to play with both feet, an advantage not held by many professionals, is in itself a new dynamic that Thomas Tuchel can look to use against other sides.

2. Dortmund still has a Strong Pressing Game
Thomas Tuchel was known to diversify his tactics, and it certainly was shown last season. Borussia managed to play both a possession-based and counter-attacking style in his inaugural season. However, the first half was reminiscent of Dortmund’s strong pressing style forged under Jurgen Klopp. Indeed, it completely overran Bayern in the first half, and once again, if not for Germany’s # 1, would have scored a couple in the early stages. With Tuchel’s new strength in depth as well this season, Dortmund can prove to be one of the more adaptable sides in Europe this year.

3. Dortmund will miss Mats Hummels the most
Although the side from Borussia park strengthened all over the pitch, Dortmund said goodbye to three major players; Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogen, and Henrikh Mhkitaryan. Although all three were strong influencers on the pitch, its Hummels they will miss the most. Dortmund lacked the passing ability from the back, as well as the leadership of the German international. Mhkitaryan will have his assists and goals be replaced by Dembele and Goetze, Gundogen was injured for most of Dortmund’s last season and done well regardless; but Marc Bartra is no replacement for the German side.
