USA: Democrats record wins in 2017 Elections

13 listopada, 2017

After a disastrous 2016 election season, the Democratic party needed to record some wins against a rampant Republican party that currently has majorities in both chambers in the legislative branch and of course has control of the executive branch through Donald Trump. The most impactful elections would only happen until next year, in the 2018 cycle, as most of the seats regarding both chambers in the Senate and House of Representatives will be hotly contested across America.

However, if one were to look at this year’s elections as a dress rehearsal for the Democrats, it does show favorable signs for the Democratic party. Of the six elections happening this year, five were won by the Democratic party. The most notable ones were the clean sweep within Virginia as well as replacing New Jersey’s Governor, who was previously the notorious Chris Christie, with the Democrat Phil Murphy. In Virginia, the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General were all won by Democrats. In New York City, Bill De Blasio, who was heavily favored to win the mayoral race, comfortable kept his seat.

The single Republican win was Utah’s House three race, where Republican candidate John Curtis replaced Jason Chaffetz, therefore keeping Republican control over the seat.

Even though these wins are a good sign for the Democratic party, there is still is a long road ahead for the National Committee to convince voters across America to continue the momentum coming into 2018.
