Municipal elections in New York, New York (2017)

New York City is holding regular elections for mayor, comptroller, public advocate, and all 51 seats on the city council in 2017. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was July 13, 2017, partisan primaries were held on September 12, 2017, and the general election is scheduled for November 7, 2017. Forty-eight of the 51 council seats are currently held by Democrats, and three are held by Republicans. The September primary featured 33 contested Democratic primaries, one contested Republican primary, and one contested Green Party primary. Ten city council seats are open in 2017. Seven incumbents, including Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito (D), were ineligible to run for re-election due to term limits.[1] Another three incumbents—Julissa Ferreras-Copeland (D), Ruben Wills (D), and David Greenfield (D)—are also not running for re-election. Ferreras-Copeland was considered a front-runner to become the next speaker but opted not to run for re-election to the council.[2] Wills was expelled from office following his conviction for fraud and grand larceny in July 2017.[3][4] Greenfield withdrew from the race to accept a position with the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty.[5] Mark-Viverito's departure from the council will result in the election of a new speaker. New York held a special election on February 14, 2017, to temporarily fill the city council seat vacated by District 9 Councilwoman Inez Dickens (D).
